Chuan Xiong is one of the most popular medicinal herbs in China. In the theory of Traditional Chinese medicine, Chuan Xiong has pungent and warm properties. Its main functions are to promote blood circulation, and relieve pain. Therefore, many practitioners prescribe it to treat irregular menstrual periods, dysmenorrhea, and headaches. It can also help patients with inflammation due to injuries, carbuncles and boils.
In addition to its medicinal uses, Chuan Xiong can act as a flavor component, and to add fragrance to some soaps and cosmetics.
As of this writing, there are no known drug interactions with Chuan Xiong or cases of adverse effects. However, note that Chuan Xiong should not be taken by patients with abnormally heavy menstrual flow.
