Licorice Root is an important herb in Chinese herbal formulas. Herbalists say it moderates and harmonises the harsh properties of other herbs and guides the herbs to all channels. In addition, licorice has traditionally been employed to alleviate coughs and sore throats. Its active chemical components include glychrrhizin and flavonoids.
Aside from its medicinal properties, it can also add flavour to various foods.
Caution: Excessive intake can lead to adverse effects. Overdoses may cause symptoms such as higher blood pressure, edema, weakness or numbness of the extremities, dizziness, or headache. Licorice Root is unsuitable for long-term consumption. By convention, the recommended dosage of Licorice root in herbal formulas is 3 – 10g/day.
